Description

** This is a YEAR long online World History class – 2 semesters. Both semesters must be completed to receive a full credit for the class. Fall semester is 1200 until the Age of Revolutions, Spring semester is Industrial Revolution until the modern era. Students can take just one semester for 1/2 credit **

In this online high school world history class, students will explore the major events, people, and civilizations from the year 1200 AD to the present day. Topics covered will include the rise and fall of empires such as the Mongols, Ottomans, and British, the Age of Exploration, the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, World War I and II, the Cold War, and modern global conflicts.

Students will learn World History through videos, interactive websites, simulations, games, primary documents, etc. The students’ mastery of the material will be assessed through quizzes and assignments (these will include creating posters, slideshows, videos, online discussions etc).

History should NOT be associated with dry facts and a list of dates. It is a story created by fascinating characters and that’s how this class will be taught. It is also not something irrelevant because it happened a long time ago. This class will constantly encourage the students to ask “So what?” as they delve into the past.

The amount of time it will take students will depend on their familiarity with online technology as well as their process skills and study habits

If students want to take the AP history exam (which covers the same time period) they can request extra study material. This class is not, however, an AP class.

This class includes geography assignments so meets states’ requirements for a World History and Geography class

I found World History to be a perfect combination of fun and thought-provoking. I appreciated this class’s focus on critical thinking—its engaging assignments (especially the reflections) encourage you to connect with history on a deeper level. Its workload encourages students to develop time-management skills along with what’s taught in the class. Meryl is very accessible if you have any questions or concerns, and it’s clear she wants her students to succeed. I highly recommend this class!
